Keep It Simple to Get Off the Diet Yo-Yo
|
| The problem with popular
weight loss programs is that they have a 95% failure rate. The
strict, low calorie diets that are advocated to "lose weight quick,"
trigger the yo-yo effect. The frustrated dieter is then off to find
the next program "guaranteed to work." |
 |
We
asked Dave Crawley, a Certified Athletic Trainer, about this dilemma.
"This is the downside with any program promising more than a one
pound per week weight loss," according to Mr. Crawley. "Your body
becomes very protective when faced with any decrease in caloric
intake and fights instinctively to prevent perceived starvation by
slowing down it's metabolism in order to conserve energy. Like a bear
emerging from hibernation, as soon as any normal amount of food is
taken in, the body will then over react and store the extra energy
like a miser."
The modern, fat rich diet has evolved over just the past fifty years.
The human body has not evolved for thousands of years in regard to
how it reacts to periods of abundance followed by a "long cold
winter." |
 |
How can
these diet programs advertise such remarkable results?
"On almost any popular diet program, if you have a lot to lose, you
can drop ten to twenty pounds the first month. But then, over the
next few months, you'll gain it all back, and more. At the end of a
year, you've "lost" fifty pounds and you weigh ten pounds more than
when you started. In order to break this cycle you have to become
aware of how your body is designed to operate and then make the
simple changes necessary in order to work with your body and not
against it." |
